چکیده

Exposure to radon progenies is one of the most important sources of dose from ionizing radiation. This is especially valid in regions of the world where people spend much time indoors, because radon (here we restrict to 222Rn and its progenies and put Rn for brevity) tends to accumulate indoors compared to the outdoor atmospheric environment. This importance has led to an immense wealth of studies and literature about Rn-related issues, over the decades. Amongst topics are understanding and modelling of temporal Rn dynamics as a function of environmental control parameters and the relations between Rn dynamics in different environmental compartments at one location. It also became clear that apart from its own radiological signifi cance, Rn can serve as tracer for environmental processes and has been used in tectonic, hydrogeologic, atmospheric dispersion and climate change studies. At the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS) in Chiba, near Tokyo, Japan, a long-term experiment of simultaneous measurement of indoor, outdoor and soil Rn concentrations has been ongoing for several years (soil Rn has been added only recently), together with recording meteorological and seismic parameters. The objective is (1) description of Rn concentrations and its dynamics in different environmental compartments; (2) studying the relationships between them and with environmental controls with the aim to develop a model of it, which has explanatory and predictive capability; and (3) to investigate whether the Rn signal carries information about tectonic activity. Daily variations of indoor air-ion and radon concentrations.

Air-ions and radon are two atmospheric trace constituents which have two opposite effects on human health: the ions are beneficial, and radon gas is potentially lethal as it increases the risk of lung cancer. In the lower troposphere, radon is the most important generator of the air-ions. Ionization by cosmic rays and radioactive minerals is almost constant in daily cycles, and variation of air...

A Seismic Factor of Radon Danger on a Case Study of Armenia

For the first time, on the basis of Spitak earthquake experience (Armenia, December 1988), it was found that an earthquake causes intensive and prolonged radon releases that are quickly dispersed in the open air and that is why they are not usually registered but contrastingly displayed in covered premises (such as dwelling houses, schools, kindergartens) even if they are at a considerable dist...

Karst Geology, Radon Fluctuations. and Implications for Measurement and Mitigation

Starting in December, 1996 and continuing through April, 1998, the Tennessee Radon Program, USEPA Region 4 Office, the Southern Regional Radon Training Center, and USEPA Headquarters conducted an investigation of several houses in Livingston, TN in which homeowners had discovered indoor radon concentrations far in excess of their original postmitigation test levels. The investigation team condu...

Can Cat Litter Be a Source of Indoor Radon ?

Emanation of radon (Rn) from several brands of cat (kitty) litter was measured with a continuous radon monitor. Radon emanating from the cat litters, encapsulated in an airtight container, produced equilibrium concentrations below 1.2 pCi/g. The measured radon flux was below 10 pCi/kg-hr for all the cat litters. Although each of the samples emitted a measurable amount of radon, the emanation is...

Background and Aim: One of the notorious  air pllutants on which air quality is determined is  carbon monoxide (CO). The aim of the present study was to measure the concentration of CO outdoor and indoor urban environments and compare it with air quality standards within buildings  and open spaces. Materials and Methods: This research was a descriptive-analytical study of CO estimation in ou...
